My room is probably one of the first things I have to describe. My room is ... kind of big. It has 21,5 square meters and for a poor student from Slovenia that feels like a castle. It is divided into main room, bathroom with a toilet, water basin and a simple shower; and a small corridor. Inside are some basic furniture requisites: bed, desk, two chairs, a big wardrobe for clothes and two smaller shelf-thingies for the stuff that you don't know where to put. There are some other objects but I will not go into details. The window has a lovely view of the neighborhood but, as I have noticed right at the start, no curtains. The biggest problem caused by that absence is not the lack of privacy, but the fact that my room is located at the we-have-sun-all-day-long side of the building. This will not be a problem in a month or so, but for now it can get really hot inside. If I state a rhetorical question: Why it is so hard for the owners (a company called Lulebo) to have their own curtains? It is really not a piece of luggage that you would consider taking with you as an exchange student. So you have three options to consider in that situation: One - do nothing, of course. Two - buy curtains, expensive. Three - improvise. As I am a bit (well, in some cases quite a lot) of a penny-pincher and I don't like sauna in my living room, I have chosen the third option. That means that for at least a month my spare bed sheet will not be stored in the wardrobe. Actually it fits to the window quite well.
The other thing that bothers me is that I had to buy light-bulbs for the bathroom. If only they would have lasted for a week, but they were blown after one second. Later I was explained that it is because of the unstable current on one of the fuses (the one that handles corridor and all the bathrooms). The owners blames the power-supply company and I am not really sure who do they blame, but the main thing is that it is not moving anywhere.
And to finish that ranting: the last thing that bothers me is the rent. The information I've received before I came here was that the rent varies between 1800 SEK and 2200 SEK. And when you get to Luleå you realize that the rent is actually 2600 SEK (roughly 280 €). So to summarize: no curtains, no light in bathroom and very very high rent. I would not call it fair, but I guess that's life. At least we have a unlimited amount of drinkable watter and electricity included in that rent. I will add also: At least it is not Norway, because I have heard yesterday that the prices there are even higher than in Sweden (sometimes even two times).
I had every intention of adding some pictures of my room to this post but I have a terrible headache now so I will publish them tomorrow in a separate post.
